Sometimes, Conservation Is Simply Showing Up

Not every weekend brings a major milestone. Some mornings are simply about turning up. Today was one of those mornings.

Just two of us reached the hill shortly after sunrise. The monsoon has now transformed the once dry, rocky slope into a landscape full of life. Grasses have returned, shrubs are thriving and the hill looks almost unrecognisable compared to how it did just a couple of months ago.

With no large plantation planned, we spent the morning doing the quieter work that often goes unnoticed.

We extended one existing contour trench, dug one new trench, and walked through the plantation, checking on the young saplings that now call this hillside home.

Every visit tells us a little more about how the trees are adapting, how the trenches are holding up and what needs attention next.

These inspections may not be as exciting as planting day, but they're just as important.

Conservation isn't measured only by the number of trees planted. It's measured by how often someone comes back to care for them.

Towards the end of the morning, we were pleasantly surprised by some unexpected company.

Four ladies who had recently completed the Annapurna Base Camp trek in April stopped by to join us; picking up tools and helping complete the day's final trench. Their enthusiasm and cheerful energy brought a lovely change to what had otherwise been a quiet morning. It was a beautiful reminder that conservation has a way of bringing people together.

Sometimes people arrive planning only to watch. And then they stay long enough to leave the hill just a little better than they found it.

As we packed up, there wasn't a major announcement to make. No large plantation. No dramatic discovery.

Just another morning spent caring for the hill. Perhaps that's what restoration looks like most of the time. Not extraordinary moments. Just ordinary people, showing up, one weekend after another.
